What is spinal pain?

Discomfort, stiffness, or aching that originates from the spine or its surrounding structures.

Spinal pain can affect the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, joints, muscles, ligaments, and nerves. It can occur in any region of the spine—cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), or lumbar (lower back)—and may present as localised pain, radiating nerve pain, or a combination of both.

What causes spinal pain?

When structural, mechanical, or neurological changes in the spine trigger inflammation, muscle tension, or nerve irritation.

Spinal pain can result from a wide range of causes such as degenerative disc disease, facet joint arthritis, nerve compression (radiculopathy), muscle strain, or postural and biomechanical issues. Poor posture, trauma, or repetitive stress can worsen these issues.

Over time, inflammation and altered movement patterns sensitise pain pathways (central sensitisation), leading to persistent discomfort in the neck, thoracic, or lumbar regions that may radiate into the limbs.

Common features of spinal pain

Spinal pain can present in different ways depending on the region affected

While symptoms can vary between people, common features include:

  • Persistent neck, back, or low back pain
  • Pain that radiates to arms, chest, or legs (radicular pain/sciatica)
  • Muscle stiffness or spasms
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in limbs
  • Pain worse with certain movements, sitting, or standing
  • Sleep disruption and fatigue
  • Reduced mobility and daily function
  • Emotional effects, including anxiety or depression from ongoing pain

Types of spinal pain

Spinal pain can result from a variety of mechanical, degenerative, inflammatory, or neurological factors.

How can we help

At Anodyne, we provide therapies designed for people whose spinal pain has not improved with conventional care

While many cases improve with physiotherapy and medication, some people continue to live with persistent spinal pain that significantly impacts their mobility, sleep, and quality of life.

Ketamine therapy

Ketamine therapy can help reduce central sensitisation and reduce neuropathic causes of spinal pain, improving both function and mood.

Stellate Ganglion Block

Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) may assist in cases where sympathetic overactivity contributes to pain, particularly in cervical and upper thoracic nerve pain conditions.

Interventional pain procedures

Interventional pain procedures (such as facet joint injections, rhizotomy, and epidural steroid injections) may also be considered in collaboration with your broader care team.
