What is a Stellate Ganglion Block?

A key nerve cluster that influences pain and the body's "fight-or-flight" system.

The stellate ganglion is a bundle of sympathetic nerves located in the lower neck. It helps regulate the body’s “fight-or-flight” response, blood flow, and pain signals. When overactive, the sympathetic nervous system contributes to conditions like PTSD, anxiety, and pain.

A Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is an image-guided injection that temporarily numbs the stellate ganglion. By interrupting its overactivity, SGB can help calm the “fight-or-flight” system, reduce pain, and relieve symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and certain pain conditions.

Why Stellate Ganglion Block?

Experience targeted relief from PTSD and chronic pain with a Stellate Ganglion Block — an image-guided treatment that calms overactive nerve pathways and helps reduce pain and anxiety.

Rapid symptom relief

Many patients experience rapid improvement in PTSD, anxiety and pain after a Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) — often within hours to days, offering faster relief than many conventional therapies.

Targets the body’s stress response

Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) works by calming the overactive sympathetic nervous system, which plays a key role in certain pain conditions, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders.

Quick recovery time

The procedure typically takes less than 20 minutes, and most patients can return to normal activity by the next day.

Minimally invasive procedure

Performed under imaging guidance, Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is a quick, low-risk injection with minimal discomfort and no need for general anaesthetic.

Who is it for?

Used for PTSD and certain chronic pain conditions, Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) offers a new path to relief and recovery when standard treatments have failed.

Whether your symptoms stem from trauma, nerve injury, or other causes, SGB may help restore calm, reduce distress, and improve function — potentially providing relief when traditional approaches have failed.

Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) can rapidly reduce symptoms of PTSD and trauma-related anxiety by calming the overactive “fight-or-flight” response, helping restore emotional balance and supporting recovery when conventional treatments have been ineffective.

By modulating the sympathetic nervous system, SGB helps quiet the brain’s overactive fear circuits, particularly the amygdala (brain's fear centre). This physiological calming allows patients to process emotions more effectively, improve sleep, and regain control over stress-related symptoms that perpetuate trauma responses.

Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) for chronic pain

Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) can relieve certain chronic pain conditions, such as complex regional pain syndrome and nerve-related pain. SGB can reduce pain intensity and improve function when other treatments have provided limited benefit.

By targeting the sympathetic nervous system, SGB helps quiet nerve overactivity that amplifies pain signals. This can improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain linked to nerve conditions or dysregulated stress responses, supporting long-term functional recovery.

Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) for other conditions

While Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is best known for its use in PTSD and chronic pain, research shows it can also improve other conditions linked to the sympathetic nervous system.

By modulating the sympathetic nervous system, SGB can influence a wide range of body functions beyond pain and mood. Studies show benefits for conditions such as Ménière’s disease, menopausal hot flushes, and hyperhidrosis, where sympathetic overactivity contributes to persistent symptoms and autonomic imbalance.

How does Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) work?

Calming overactive nerve pathways at their source.

In chronic pain, the mechanism depends on the condition, but commonly involves reducing norepinephrine release. This stress chemical activates pain-sensitive nerves and can affect temperature and sweating.

In PTSD, after trauma we see a growth of extra sympathetic nerves. This can lead to excess norepinephrine and a state of constant “fight-or-flight.” This overstimulates the amygdala, driving nightmares, anxiety, hypervigilance, and insomnia.

By injecting a local anaesthetic around the stellate ganglion, SGB acts to reduce norepinephrine release and stellate ganglion overactivity and thereby ease symptoms.

What to expect

Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is an image guided injection, delivered by a qualified interventional pain specialist in a hospital setting.

Your Stellate Ganglion Block journey starts with a medical consultation, then a day-hospital procedure under precise image guidance, and attentive follow-up to monitor results and guide any further treatment needs.

Consultation, screening, and planning

Your Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) begins with a comprehensive medical assessment, including questionnaires and a medical consultation, to review your history and assess suitability.

We explore your condition, explain the procedure, and design a tailored treatment plan, ensuring you understand the potential benefits, risks, and expected outcomes.

Procedure in day hospital

Once approved, the Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is performed as a day case in a hospital by a qualified interventional pain specialist. The procedure is completed under image guidance for accuracy and safety. An anaesthetist will also be present to administer IV sedation to ensure your comfort.

Depending on your treatment plan, you may require a single injection or it may be part of a series of treatments across several weeks.

After the Procedure

Once the procedure is completed, you will be monitored in a post-procedure recovery area until it’s safe for discharge — typically within two hours.

Most patients can resume normal activities within 24 hours, though some temporary localised discomfort may occur.

Aftercare, Monitoring & Support

We provide structured clinical follow-up, including medical review and questionnaire measures, to assess your response, address any concerns, and guide further care.

Your ongoing plan may include repeat procedures, allied health support, or integration with other therapies for sustained improvement. We will coordinate with your broader care team for comprehensive support.
