What is spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis can develop for a number of reasons, depending on age, activity level, and underlying spinal structure.

Common causes include:

  • Degenerative changes associated with ageing
  • Stress fractures (spondylolysis), often in younger or athletic individuals
  • Congenital structural differences
  • Trauma or injury

In adults, degenerative changes in the lower spine are the most common cause.

Common symptoms of spondylolisthesis

Not everyone with spondylolisthesis experiences symptoms. When symptoms are present, they are often related to mechanical strain or nerve involvement.

Common symptoms may include:

  1. Lower back pain, often worse with standing or walking
  2. Stiffness and reduced mobility
  3. Pain radiating into the buttocks or legs
  4. Numbness, tingling, or weakness due to nerve irritation

Symptoms can vary over time and may be influenced by posture and activity levels.

How can we help

At Anodyne, we focus on understanding both the structural and neurological contributors to pain.

In spondylolisthesis, symptoms are often driven not only by mechanical instability, but also by nerve irritation and, in some cases, increased sensitivity of the nervous system.

Our approach is centred on identifying the key drivers of your pain and tailoring treatment accordingly.

Ketamine therapy

In some patients with persistent or treatment-resistant pain, particularly where central sensitisation is present, ketamine therapy may be considered as part of a broader pain management plan.

Ketamine acts on different pathways within the nervous system and may help modulate persistent pain signalling when symptoms extend beyond structural findings.
