What is esketamine treatment?

A new approach to treatment-resistant depression

Esketamine is a derivative of ketamine, delivered as an intranasal spray (Spravato®) and approved for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression. It is administered under strict medical supervision in accredited healthcare settings.

Unlike traditional antidepressants, which act on serotonin and noradrenaline pathways, esketamine works on the glutamate system, targeting NMDA receptors in the brain — influencing mood pathways in a fundamentally different way.

Who is it for?

If you have tried multiple antidepressants without adequate relief, esketamine treatment may offer a new option.

Esketamine is not a first-line treatment. It is typically considered for patients who have treatment-resistant depression (failure of two or more antidepressants) and experience persistent depressive symptoms despite ongoing care.

Esketamine for treatment-resistant depression

Esketamine treatment offers rapid relief for treatment-resistant depression by targeting brain pathways differently from standard antidepressants — providing a new option for patients who have not responded to multiple medication trials.

How does esketamine work?

A different pathway forward.

Esketamine works on the brain’s glutamate system rather than the serotonin or noradrenaline pathways targeted by traditional antidepressants. By acting on NMDA receptors, it promotes rapid neuroplasticity — helping to "reset" dysfunctional neural circuits involved in mood, stress, and emotional processing.

This mechanism is one reason many patients experience improvement within hours to days, rather than weeks.

What to expect

Esketamine treatment is a guided, medically supervised experience. From assessment through dosing to recovery, we guide you through each step in a safe, supportive environment.

Treatments are conducted in a calm, supervised clinical setting with regular follow-up care. With a personalised approach, we ensure safety, maximise benefits, and track your progress over time.

Consultation, screening, and planning

Following referral, we begin with a comprehensive medical and psychiatric assessment, including screening tests, questionnaires, and a medical consultation. This ensures esketamine treatment is safe, appropriate, and tailored to your needs before creating a personalised treatment plan.

After treatment sessions

You will remain under observation for approximately two hours after dosing, while our team monitors your vitals and ensures any short-term effects have settled. You will need to arrange transport home and avoid driving for the rest of the day.

Maintenance, monitoring & support

Treatment usually follows an induction phase (twice weekly for 4 weeks), followed by maintenance sessions spaced over time depending on response. We provide regular follow-up reviews to track your progress, monitor effectiveness, and ensure ongoing safety — coordinating with your broader care team for comprehensive support.
